Chinese Figure Skaters Face Investigation After Displaying Toy Missile during Competition
ISU officials have launched an investigation after two Chinese figure skaters appeared with an object resembling a toy ballistic missile during an international skating competition.
Television footage showed Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing waiting with a sizable prop shaped like a rocket labeled “DF-61” as they awaited their scores at the “kiss and cry” area during the event.
This model represents a new China-produced ground-launched long-range weapon designed for carrying nuclear weapons, which was unveiled during a national ceremony recently.
Officials is aware that an inappropriate soft toy seems to have been one of the objects tossed onto the ice by spectators after a performance at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China event,” the organization stated in an emailed statement.
The item was then held by the athletes after their performance. The ISU regrets the incident and will look into it more deeply.”
Ren and Xing finished eighth out of ten teams in the ice dance event, with the victory going to the American pair from the US.
